But what are blackheads? Blackheads are sebum-clogged hair follicles or pores that turn black due to oxidation. They’re essentially harmless, but are not cute. And unless you put in some serious time and effort, they can never go away 100%. To eliminate blackheads entirely, you need to shrink your pores (which is pretty darn hard to do) and decrease your natural oil production.

So maybe blackheads won’t go away without a fight, but these methods below (if done religiously) will help get rid of them almost permanently.

1. Facial Scrub

A scrub specially designed to fight blackheads is a great first step in eliminating these suckers. There are a few medicated blackhead scrubs you can buy from department stores, but we suggest you make your own at home. It’s cheaper, super easy and nothing is more powerful than mother nature.

How to do it: Take 1 tablespoon of sea salt, 1 teaspoon of lemon juice and 1 teaspoon of distilled water. Mix together in a bowl (not too long or else the salt will dissolve) and apply to your face. Rub in a circular motion for 5-10 minutes, especially where your blackheads are. The dead skin not only removes the dead skin and dirt but helps with your oil production. The lemon juice helps to tighten pores so that those sneaky blackheads can’t develop as quickly.

2. Tighten Pores

Technically, there’s no way to tighten pores permanently. Your pore size is part of your genetic makeup and can’t be fixed unless you have the help of a dermatologist. But there is a way to tighten your pores regularly that’s easy and inexpensive.

How to do it: Depending on your preference, you can use tea tree oil or lemon juice for this. Take 1 cup of distilled water and mix with 1 tablespoon of tea tree oil OR lemon juice. Mix and apply to your face with a cotton pad. Do this before bed time and make sure to rinse off with warm water in the morning.

3. DIY Peel Mask

Peel masks are like wax. If done right, they grab everything off your face from blackheads to hair! A strong peel mask can get into those hard to reach crevices and pull out all of the gunk.

How to do it: To make the best peel-off mask you’ll ever use, mix 1 tablespoon of gelatin (like jello powder) and 1 tablespoon of milk. Mix together in a cup and put in the microwave for about 30 seconds. You must apply quickly before it hardens, but be very careful as it is hot. Apply on your whole face, but be careful not to get your eyebrows (it will pull your hair out!). Leave on for 15-20 minutes then pull off.

4. Biore Strips

When all else fails, use blackhead strips. Depending on your pore size, you might notice that your blackheads come right out with the help of the strips. If your pores are deep but narrow in width, it could be difficult to get those out. Try steaming your face first to open your pores. Then, place a strip where your blackheads are the worst. Let sit for 15 minutes and remove slowly. Also, make sure you quickly put acne fighting medication on those spots right after. Your pores are now open and are susceptible to getting more blackheads or even worse breakouts.
