1. Get enough sleep. 

Don’t think this has anything to do with skincare? Think again. As Real Simple reports, beauty sleep is a real thing. The magazine reported that:

“Research has shown—that a lack of sleep can contribute to periorbital hyperpigmentation, a.k.a. “raccoon eyes.” And a 2010 study from researchers in Sweden showed that a group of participants were rated as more attractive after eight hours of shut-eye compared to when they were sleep deprived.”

The moral: Aim for seven hours a night. Put your phone far away if you need to, but prioritize your z’s.

2. Drink plenty of water. 

Celebrities swear by this trick, which UW Health endorses. Your skin is an organ and it needs water to function properly. Eight glasses a day is a good goal, but some super overachievers, like Gabrielle Union, drink as much as a gallon of H2O per day.

3. Use sunscreen—not just at the beach. 

Using sunscreen every single day, every time you go outside, is one of the best ways to protect your skin from harmful UV rays and unnecessary damage.

4. Moisturize! 

This is another great habit that your skin will thank you for when you’re older. Speaking to Real Simple, David J. Leffell, M.D., professor of dermatology at the Yale School of Medicine, said, “People with perfect skin are in touch with how dry their skin may be and how important it is to keep skin moist.”

5. Wash your face every night.

This one is easy to get lazy about, especially if you’re up late and tired and just want to crash, but falling asleep with the day’s makeup and oil all over your face is bad news for your pores. Wash every night and you’ll have fewer breakouts and more glowing skin.
