1. Ice It
For pimples that aren’t fully infected or inflammed, applying ice can diminish swelling and urge those nasty toxins to push out from underneath the skin. Wrap an ice cube in a towel and hold it on the pimple for a couple of seconds at a time. Repeat a few times throughout the day. The zit should disappear within a day or two.
2. Dab on Some Lemon Juice
Lemons are a natural antiseptic, which means they are awesome for fighting the bacteria that causes acne in the first place. Its high acidity will help unclog your pores, while its natural lightening powers will reduce the redness of your zits. Dab a clean cotton swab with lemon juice to your pimples before you sleep and wake up to clear skin!
3. Apply Toothpaste
This is a fave go-to method of many celebs, including Gigi Hadid and Amanda Seyfried. Simply spot treat your zit with a tiny dab of toothpaste before bed. For best results, make sure the toothpaste is an actual paste and not gel. In the morning, wash off your new fresh face. You can also do it Gigi’s way. After dabbing on toothpaste, she takes “[a small piece of] toilet paper, get it wet, put it on my finger and press it over the top and peel [the excess paper off] around my finger. It dries kind of like a papier-mâché and it holds in the moisture and the toothpaste. In the morning, you just put a wet towel on it, and it all comes off.”
4. Wash Your Face With Salicylic Acid Cleanser
Salicylic acid is a deeply exfoliating compound that gets at the root of your pores. Basically, it will zap your zit to the core, while also getting rid of excess surrounding bacteria. It’s powerful stuff, which should be used only in times of emergency. Use Paula’s Choice SKIN PERFECTING 2% BHA Liquid ($23 20). Add a little to a cotton swab and dab onto your affected skin. You should notice a difference right away.
5. Spot Treat It Gently
Sometimes lobbing your skin with tons of chemical and harsh stuff can cause your skin to dry out, which actually is WORSE for your acne — and could potentially cause more. If you must reach for a spot treatment, at least reach for something natural like the Body Shop’s Tea Tree Oil Targeted Blemish Stick ($12). Tea tree oil has been used by dermatologists and skin experts for years to reduce skin irritation and acne, and its super effective and works fast.
6. Try Neutrogena’s Light Therapy Acne Mask
Beyond feeling like you are in the middle of a science fiction movie, this $30 contraption actually helped reduce our acne over time. Use it daily, or when you first notice a pimple popping up. The mask comes with a 30-use activator that you can replace when you have used all of it. You keep the actual mask forever. Simply wash and dry your face, turn your mask on, and bask in the glow. 10 minutes later, the mask automatically turns off and you are done.
