3 Non-Basic Updos to Keep You Cool All Summer

Awesomeness continues after advertisement

When it comes to wearing your hair up for summer, we love a good topknot. But sometimes wearing your hair the same way all the time kinda gets boring (ponytail, we’re talking about you too). Don’t get us wrong: we love those timeless — okay, basic — updos, but sometimes it’s a good idea to mix things up in a while. Luckily there are a lot of cool updo styles that not only look stunning, but don’t require a lot of hair talent either.

Here are three updos to help keep you feeling and looking cool all summer long.

1. Crown Braid

Basically THE hairdo of Coachella, this boho look is actually a lot easier to do than it seems. It goes perf for both fancy occasions (like your cousin’s wedding) or hanging out with your squad at a — you guessed it — music festival.

First, separate your hair into two sections. Next, dutch braid each section separately, which means you’re crossing each of the strands underneath each other instead of over one another. After, secure each braid. Now it’s time to make your crown. Pull one of the braids from left to right, over top of your head, just a few inches from your forehead. Secure this braid with a bobbi pin. Now pull the other braid from right to left, pushing it up against the previous braid, and securing it with another bobbi pin. Annnnd now you’ve got yourself a hairstyle literally fit for a queen.

2. Twisted Chignon

Think of the twisted chignon as the chicer French cousin of your go-to top knot. It’s an easy ‘do that’s super polished but doesn’t look like you’re trying TOO hard, either.

Working with day old hair, blowdry your hair by tilting your mane upside down and using a diffuser to amp up your volume. Next, use a mousse to create and hold more volume. Then part your hair to your preferred side and make a ponytail near the nape of your neck. Then begin to coil your pony into a counter-clockwise circle and twist it into a bun shape on your head. Secure the bun with bobbi pins all around and voila! A tres manifique hairstyle!

3. Faux Bob

Want to try a short do but don’t want to chop your locks? Then the faux bob is for you. It goes with everything, and it’ll keep all of your friends guessing.

After appying your fave styling mousse or thickening spray, divide your hair into two sections by parting your hair horizontally from ear to ear. Pin your top section with a duck bill clip, and then separate your bottom section into two inch pieces before rolling them up towards your scalp, securing each with pins. Unclip your top section. If you have layers, you can just leave the layers and have them cover your back section. If you only have one length, roll the ends underneath your bottom section and secure pins. Spray with holding mist and now you have a Taylor Swift-worthy bob, without the scissors!
