Rihanna seems intent on conquering the whole world. First, she took the music industry by storm, then she branched out into acting, and then she quickly became one of our top fashion icons. Now, she’s taking over the beauty world with her Fenty Beauty line.

So what inspired her to get into the beauty biz? In a new interview with In Style, RiRi revealed the close-to-her-heart reason she created Fenty.
“[My mom] worked behind a cosmetics counter at a department store in Barbados, and she did makeup for weddings,” Rihanna explained. “That’s where my obsession for cosmetics and perfume came from, but I wasn’t allowed to wear makeup unless it was for a special occasion.”

Looking at RiRi today, of course, you’d assume she’s been working on her makeup look since birth — she’s just so glam. But that’s not the case.
“Lipstick in Barbados? Not unless I was a bridesmaid in a friend’s wedding,” Rihanna told the magazine. “My mom wasn’t flexible. I wore no makeup.”
Now, though, Rihanna’s running the beauty show. She even tried her hand as a beauty vlogger recently, posting a tutorial for her new lipstick shade, Stunna. “Don’t laugh at my tutorial skillz,” she captioned the Instagram video, which is predictably fab.
Rihanna says she’s been thinking about launching a beauty line for years, but she needed to wait until the right time, when she knew she could really put out something special.
“You have all these ideas of things you want for yourself, and for me, beauty was a natural fit because makeup is such a huge part of my career and image,” she said. “I wanted to do a line for years, but it needed to be credible, something that industry pros and girls around the world would respect.”
And as for her personal favorite product in the line — it’s not the Stunna lipstick (even though that is, well, stunning).
“I love the Killawatt highlighter because you can use it in so many ways. I put it on my eyes, cheeks, and body. It goes on smooth, and the texture is superfine, almost like liquid — plus it’s extremely high-shine. There’s a ton of different colors.”
