Summer can wreak havoc on your skin. The constant fight between sun exposure and sunblock, not to mention sweat and, if you’re trying to cool off, salt water or pool chlorine—it’s a nightmare for your pores.

Expert facials can cost a fortune, but there are ways to give your face the deep clean it needs at home. Follow these steps, and your skin can feel just as fresh and soft as it does after a trip to the esthetician.

Start out by using a cleanser that’ll remove every drop of makeup from your face and allow you start with a fresh palette. To really get a deep clean and start opening up your pores, remove it with warm water.
2. Remove impurities
Once the warm water has gotten your skin ready (you can also press a warm washcloth to your face to intensify the process), apply a charcoal mask. You can make the process feel even more luxurious by using a clean makeup brush to brush it onto your face! Leave it on for at least 10 minutes to really get the maximum benefits; may we suggest a few cucumbers over the eyes while you wait? The charcoal will help pull out all of the impurities—dirt, oil, environmental toxins, etc.—that have settled into your pores over time.
Now that your skin is as clean as it can be, give it some TLC. A replenishing sheet mask will soothe your face, calming down redness and helping to restore moisture. Leave it on for half an hour to allow your skin to really soak up all the good ingredients (a quick episode on Netflix might be in order, but relaxing shows only!). You can even use your fingertips to massage over the mask.
This is a good time to apply a treatment to your skin depending on its needs. If you have acne prone skin, try swiping a salicylic acid pad all over your face. If your skin has seen a little too much sun this summer, apply a retinol cream around your eyes to help keep crows feet far, far away (it’s never too early!).
Finish up your at-home facial by sealing in all the good things you’ve applied with a moisturizer. A gel formula will feel cooling and soothing on your face, especially good for summertime when the weather’s hot.
Now you’ve given your skin a deep cleansing, intensive moisture, and a defense against any problems in just five steps. Hopefully, it’s given you a chance to relax indoors, too—hopefully in some air conditioning! If you want to bond with friends or family, at-home summer facials are a great thing to do in groups, too.
