Going back to school and making new friends can be tough to begin with, and it can be even harder if you’re shy. However, don’t let your shyness get in the way — it’s time to get out of your comfort zone and show everyone all of the magnificent qualities that make you who you are!

Here are seven tips for making new friends at school. Remember, you got this.

1. Join clubs / extra-curricular activities

One of the best ways to meet new people is by joining after school clubs. This way you meet people who you already know have similar interests as you — whether it’s sports, theater, cooking, or science. It’s easier to talk to people when you can bond over a mutual interest.

2. Be yourself

There are so many wonderful and unique things about you that can make you stand out in a crowd — so why not show it? Plus, the friends who are meant to stay in your life will love you for who you are. Always remember — be yourself because everyone else is already taken!

3. Compliment someone

Sometimes amazing friendships begin just by being nice to people! So next time you see someone rocking a super cute shirt that you like (bonus points if it’s a band t-shirt that you’re a fan of!), make sure to let that person know. Hey, you might just be complimenting your new BFF!

4. Don’t be afraid to make the first move

We get it, the thought of going up to someone and introducing yourself can feel like the end of the world to someone that’s shy. But here’s something to consider: the person you want to be friends with might just be as nervous to go up to you! Even though it might seem scary, it’s always worth a shot to go up to someone and start a conversation or invite them to sit with you at lunch.

5. Use social media

You know that thing we like to use called “social media?” Well, it can be used to your advantage if you’re someone that’s shy! Try liking someone’s tweet if you find it funny or super #relatable. Or leave a comment on their Insta if you’re totally digging their feed. Social media is a great way to show that you have a lot in common with someone and that you want to learn more about them!

6. Smile

We know, this one sounds way too simple to actually be helpful. But trust us, it works. Smiling is a way of welcoming someone to come up and say hello — even if you may be too shy to do it first. A smile can speak for itself, so it’s time to flash those pearly whites of yours.

7. Be positive

When you have a positive outlook on life, more people are drawn towards you. Even if you feel like you’re having trouble making friends, just stay positive that soon you’ll meet someone you get along with. Plus, your positivity will radiate nothing but good vibes, and as we all know, your vibe attracts your tribe!
