High Schools in Pop Culture We Wish We Went To

Getting a diploma is the least important thing here

As we gear up for midterms, it’s hard not to wish the end of the school year was here already. That is unless you happen to attend one of these schools, where adventure, drama, and excitement always seem to be happening. These are the ten best high schools in pop culture, in everything from musical craze to actual magic.

1. Degrassi from Degrassi

Seriously, what hasn’t happened in Degrassi, our favorite Canadian high school? In over six series and hundreds of episodes, the students have experienced everything from fated romances to fateful accidents. And, still, they always have us come back again.

2. Dillon High from Friday Night Lights

Over five glorious seasons, we got to experience game after game of the now iconic Dillon Panthers. And we went through it all with the team, even after they graduated. At the center of everything, there was always Coach Taylor (Kyle Chandler), giving the team (and all of us watching) the encouragement to always keep going. Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose.

3. East High from High School Musical

No other school could have a star-crossed romance between a basketball superstar (Zac Efron) and a mathlete (Vanessa Hudgens), both of which have a hidden passion for singing. East High is where is at. Their students are incredibly talented, their athletes can bust a serious rhyme, and they all break into dance at the cafeteria. We’re all in this together, indeed.

4. The New York High School of Performing Arts from Fame

How far will you go to reach your dreams? Few films are more inspiring (and at the same time painfully realistic) about artists pursuing their passion than the 1980 classic Fame. Inside the New York High School of Performing Arts, students breathe and live dance, music and performance. But that’s not enough. In order to succeed, you have to work for what you want. Work really, really hard.

5. Hogwarts from the Harry Potter series

Admit it, you’re still waiting for your letter from Hogwarts. I mean, who wouldn’t want to attend the elite wizardry school with its charms and potions classes, secret classrooms and levitating stairwells, and Quidditch matches every weekend? And now that Voldemort is defeated, school years will come with a lot less hassle.

6. McKinley High School from Glee

No other school celebrated outcasts and individuality more than Glee’s McKinley High School. There, you could safely be whoever you wanted to be under the safety of their glee club. Everyone was welcome, from the talented kid in the wheelchair and the popular cheerleader, to the transfer transgender student, and the devilishly handsome Warbler. All while doing harmonies and a lot of Journey covers.

7. Ridgemont High from Fast Times at Ridgemont High

This movie may not be as much as the high school itself, but it does bring a group of characters together that are all trying to find themselves. Because isn’t that what high school is all about? It captures the growing pains perfectly. And Jennifer Jason Leigh is amazing as the lead, Stacy.

8. Rydell High from Grease

You know the story. You sing along to the songs. And you wish you were born to hand jive alongside Sandy (Olivia Newton-John) and Danny (John Travolta), in the classic story of boy-meets-girl-at-summer, and girl-tries-to-win-him-back. Kids in Rydell knew how to dress, dance, and fix cars.

9. Sky High from Sky High

Sky High is an academy for superheroes. That’s all you really need to know not only to watch, but also immensely enjoy this Disney gem. Will Stronghold (Michael Angarano) is the son of the most famous super-couple in the world, and has to live up to their shadow when he enrolls in Sky High. There, he encounters people with all sorts of powers that will become his allies and archenemies. A gem.

10. Sunnyvale High School from Buffy, the Vampire Slayer

For many, high school was hell. For Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar), this was literal. The high school she decided to attend was conveniently located over the mouth to Hell, which of course made a perfect passageway for all sorts of demons creatures. Good thing she was a vampire slayer.
