Why the Holidays Are Way More Fun When You’re Single

'Tis the season to mingle

Traditional wisdom — a.k.a. your fave Hallmark holiday movies plus almost every single Christmas song ever made — tell us that being single around the holidays is a fate worse than being forced to eat your Nana’s fruitcake. Though we can’t stop your cousin from pestering you about your single status, we can assure you that being coupled up during the holiday season isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

In fact, being single around the holidays guarantees a way merrier time. Here’s why.

1. You Can Do Whatever You Want

Want to cozy up to Netflix and never leave your couch? You can do that! Want to meet up with your squad for a cup of hot cocoa? You can do that, too!

The bonus of being single is that you can choose whatever you want to do whenever you want to do it, without needing to compromise with someone else.

It’s not like you *can’t* be alone or hang with your friends when you’re in a relationship, but juggling another person’s schedule, especially around the holidays, can be tricky. Do you, bb!

2. There’s One Less Gift to Buy

The holidays aren’t all about the gifts — but they kinda are. And if you’re on a tight budget, holiday shopping for the people in your life can be stressful. Dating someone not only puts another gift on your list, but it also involves the awk dilemma of, “Are we at the point in our relationship where we’re exchanging gifts? And if so, WHAT DO I EVEN GET YOU??”

As a single person, you don’t have to deal with that drama. You can save your $$$ and even splurge on yourself!

3. You Don’t Have to Meet Anyone’s Family (or Impress Anyone)

Lucky you! You don’t have to meet someone’s parents, or grandparents, or siblings, or cousins. No awkward dinner convos for you! You can devour that cookie tray in your sweatpants without any raised eyebrows or judge-y stares. Want to pass out on eggnog after belting out Justin Bieber’s “Underneath the Mistletoe”? YOU CAN DO THAT.

4. You Get to Mingle

There are a ton of parties this time of year, which means there’s A LOT of mingling to do (*wink*). There’s a chance you’ll meet your special mistletoe kiss — if that’s what you’re there for. But you might also just want to go to a party and not deal with flirting, and have a good time with your friends. Or maybe you want to kiss more than one person underneath the mistletoe! YASS, GIRL.

The truth is, there are soooo many options when you’re single. Probably the best part of all? You don’t have to babysit your date at your internship’s holiday bash.

5. You Don’t Have to Do Anything on New Year’s Eve

LBH: New Year’s Eve is overrated. It’s usually a hyped-up, super-expensive chaotic mess no matter where you end up going. When you’re single, you can forget the whole midnight kiss (another overrated thing, by the way) and do New Year’s however YOU want.

Want to stay in with your family and play board games? Do it. Want to plan a weekend getaway with your bestie? You can do that, too.

Ultimately, by being single this holiday season you can create your own holiday tradition, and make it awesome. Because the only person you need to please is yourself.
