Calvin Harris Opens Up About His Behavior After the Taylor Swift Split

"I snapped."

Breakups are hard. They’re hard when they happen totally in private and they can feel harder and harder the more people know about them. So, when you’re a world-famous couple like, say, Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris, for example, a split can feel totally world-rocking.

When Taylor and Calvin broke up after over a year of dating, things got a little ugly. It was leaked that Taylor had secretly helped cowrite Calvin and Rihanna’s hit “This Is What You Came For,” and Calvin lashed out on social media.

“Hurtful to me at this point that her and her team would go so far out of their way to try and make ME look bad at this stage,” Harris tweeted on July 13 about Taylor, according to Billboard. “I know you’re off tour and you need someone new to try and bury like Katy [Perry] ETC but I’m not that guy, sorry. I won’t allow it.”

Now that he’s had time to reflect on everything and get some distance though, Calvin is opening up about what went through his mind back when the breakup was fresh.

“It was completely the wrong instinct,” Calvin told British GQ of the tweets. “I was protecting what I see as my one talent in the world being belittled. It felt like things were piling on top of me and that was when I snapped.”

At the end of the day, Calvin feels like the publicity was just too much.

“It’s very difficult when something I consider so personal plays out very publicly. The aftermath of the relationship was way more heavily publicized than the relationship itself. When we were together, we were very careful for it not to be a media circus. She respected my feelings in that sense. I’m not good at being a celebrity. But when it ended, all hell broke loose. Now I see that Twitter thing as a result of me succumbing to pressure,” he said. “It took me a minute to realize that none of that matters.”

We totally get the feeling of succumbing to the pressure (internal or external) to lash out about an ex. Breakups are an emotional time for anyone. The good news is Taylor and Calvin are reportedly on good terms now. They’re even reportedly at that post-breakup stage where they can text casually as friends.
