Remember the golden days of One Direction? Back when the guys all wore coordinating outfits and crooned about what makes you beautiful? Back when Louis Tomlinson and Harry Styles had the most adorable friendship in all of music?

Fans loved how much the guys loved each other – a little too much, in fact. 1D fans started shipping the guys and even gave them a couple name: Larry Stylinson. The rumors persisted even though Louis had a serious girlfriend (Eleanor Calder, who he’s now back together with) at the time.
Eventually, the conspiracy theory grew so big that it drove a wedge between Louis and Harry, and Louis is finally talking about the impact it had on their friendship.
In a new interview with The Sun, Louis got really real about how he feels about Larry Stylinson and how it changed his friendship. At first, he and Harry clicked more than anyone else in the band.
“In a band, you’re going to get some people who get on really well and some people who get on quite well,” he explained. “I have forever had a very, very high level of respect for Harry. He’s great in this situation, he’s great on stage, he’s a great musician and artist. It’s just one of those things that happens naturally in a band.”
Then, the rumors just became too much.
“It kind of happened naturally for me and Harry because a certain amount of the fans drew up this conspiracy,” Louis said about the fan theory. “When it first came around I was with Eleanor, and it actually felt a little bit disrespectful to Eleanor, who is my girlfriend now. I’m so protective over things like that, about the people I love.”
Eventually all of the attention made Louis and Harry distance themselves from each other. “It created this atmosphere between the two of us where everyone was looking into everything we did. It took away the vibe you get off anyone. It made everything, I think on both fences, a little bit more unapproachable.”
This isn’t the only 1D relationship that’s been strained for Louis though. He and Zayn Malik have had a famously (or infamously) strained relationship.
They had a full-on Twitter feud in 2015. It started with Naughty Boy tweeted a picture of Zayn with the caption, “Replace this.”
Louis subtweeted Zayn, making fun of the filter on the photo:
A bit of back and forth resulted in Zayn tweeting Louis, “remember when you had a life and stopped making b*tchy comments about mine?” Ouch.
In January, Louis said he and Zayn were finally on good terms. “Me and Zayn have spoken recently,” he said, according to Teen Vogue. “We’ve got to a point now where, you know, we can just really be happy for each other. Things have happened in the past, of course. Yeah, it’s great. His first song is an absolute smash.”
It looks like we might have Louis’ mom, Johannah Deakin, to thank for the reconciliation. Louis recently revealed that his mom’s dying wish before she passed away last December after a battle with leukemia was for him to make up with Zayn.
“My mum said, ‘You’ve got to get back in contact with Zayn. Life’s too f–king short,'” he said. “My mum always knew what I was feeling and what I wanted.”
Every friendship goes through ups and downs and when you spend as much time together as the guys of 1D did during their early years as a band, tensions are bound to arise. Rumors, fan theories, and members breaking off from the group to pursue solo careers have all caused a strain on the guys’ relationships over the years, but at the end of the day, their bond is too strong to be broken by any of it and that’s a beautiful thing.
