Not many people can say they’ve been chosen by Justin Bieber to open his tour, but Corey Harper has already achieved a lot of things most haven’t.

A self-taught musician who learned to play guitar by ear (and by watching videos of well-known artists), Harper has been dubbed “John Mayer’s breezier fraternal twin” by Rolling Stone, and Billboard premiered his latest music video, “No Good Alone”, this past September.
So yeah. He’s kind of a big deal.
Harper recently stopped by AwesomenessTV’s Santa Monica headquarters to perform as part of our ATV Sessions series, and we had a chance to chat with him one-on-one. We discovered five cool things you should know about Harper (who is guaranteed to be your new crush, BTW), so read on to get familiar:

His first show was in front of 12,000 people.
Harper met Justin Bieber and Niall Horan a couple of years ago, when he first moved to L.A., but things definitely changed for him when Bieber heard Harper jamming one day at home. Bieber was so impressed that he asked Harper to open for him on his Purpose tour.
“[The Bieber concert] was my first show I’d ever done for my own stuff,” Harper explained. “My first show was in my home arena with my acoustic guitar playing for 12,000 people.”
He’s worked with Niall Horan.
Harper has worked with the Irish 1D member, opening at some of his shows, and describes Horan as a “genuine, caring person.”
He adds, “I think most of his fans don’t realize how much knowledge he has about the music that me and him both enjoy, like the ’60s and ’70s rock music. He’s good at soccer, too!”
He’s geeked over instruments with John Mayer.
Once, after playing a show in Malibu, Harper had the chance to meet one of his musical heroes, John Mayer. It was his instrument that got Mayer talking.
“He came over to our group because he saw that we had instruments. He pointed to my pedal train and was like, ‘I remember those days.'”
Harper credits Mayer with inspiring him to play the electric guitar and they both share a love of blues and rock music.
His family’s got a really cute nickname for him.
Since he was little, Harper’s friends and family have called him “Charps” and “Charper” (because his initials are C. Harper). We think that sounds like a great name for his fandom, if you ask us!
His favorite movie of the year is probably the same as yours.
Harper is a huge fan of thrillers and horror movies, and his favorite from this year was the breakout horror film Get Out. (Us too, obvs.)
The first song he learned to play on the guitar was “Blackbird” by The Beatles.
Harper was just 11 years old when he learned the classic tune. “My brother’s friend was over and taught me how to play,” Harper explained to ATV.
