At this point, it’s hard to imagine anyone but Katherine Langford playing Hannah Baker in 13 Reasons Why, but back in the day Selena Gomez was actually set to star.

At that time—back in 2011 Seventeen reports—Selena was going to star in the project (which was set to be a movie at Universal, not a TV show at all) and her mom, Mandy Teefey would have produced.

However, the adaptation became a Netflix series instead of a movie and did not premiere until 2017. The result? Selena stepped behind the scenes and took on a role as a producer and Katherine Langford played the role she was born to play.

“I see myself as Hannah so much,” Selena told The Hollywood Reporter. “Seven years ago I did and even more so today, which I think is funny because it’s backwards. The older I get the more insecure I get, which is odd. But that’s something a lot of people can relate to. Her personality is a quiet strength. I’ve never really been the one to be in anyone’s face. A lot of girls feel like they have to be a certain way for attention. Social media has amplified all of that. I get that she didn’t want that to be what her life was.”
