Just when we were recovering from Shawn Mendes‘ raspy and magical MTV Video Music Awards performance, we’re hit with more Mendes news (and we certainly aren’t complaining). MTV‘s series MTV Unplugged, which features today’s hottest artists performing acoustic versions of their hits, have chosen Shawn Mendes to kick off their new season and show come back. Just Shawn and his guitar? Yeah, there’s nothing holding us back from tuning in on September 8.
Speaking of which, Shawn starts his Unplugged episode with his No. 1 hit “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back.” If you think acoustic songs can only be the “sad, cry in the shower type,” think again. This stripped down version still has us rocking out. Here’s a sneak peek:

His flawless acoustic versions didn’t just happen over night. Shawn told MTV that he prepared for his Unplugged debut, which was shot at The Ace Hotel in Los Angeles, by watching greats like Nirvana and Pearl Jam who performed on the show before him. He also rehearsed his acoustic arrangements with his band before and after his shows during his Illuminate tour.
Shawn’s set list will include “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back,” “Ruin,” “Three Empty Words,” “Never Be Alone,” “Roses,” “Mercy,” and more. Plus, some of his songs will be accompanied by a piano and a four string quartet. Swoon.
“This is very special to me,” Shawn tells the crowd before he starts his performance. And from what we can tell, it will certainly be special for his fans as well. Mark your calendars; his full MTV Unplugged episode airs on MTV September 8th.
